Bercow
review This NLT policy statement
covers the recent Bercow Review (led by John Bercow, MP) -a review
of the provision of services for children and young people with
speech, language and communication needs. The final report was
published in July 2008 following an interim report in
March.
Literacy
under the Conservative party This NLT
discussion piece examines the Conservatives policy on
literacy.
Interesting
choice: the (relative) importance of choice and interest in reader
engagement Why do some individuals become involved
and interested in their reading and others do not? How can interest
be stimulated in those who currently lack it? This new NLT research
paper looks at the impact of choice, interest and self-awareness on
reading behaviour. It combines research evidence about the
importance of choice and interest in reading activities with the
practical aspect of this topic and explores the strategies that
could be used to make choice meaningful and to engage interest most
effectively.

Summer reads in
full swing As temperatures heat up, the NLT's Reading Is
Fundamental, UK (RIF) team has kicked off the 2008 RIF/WHSmith
Summer Read. Now in its fourth year, the scheme will give
around 3,600 children the chance to choose and keep two free books
at fun events taking place during summer play schemes across the
country in July and August 2008. Each child will also receive a RIF
book bag, a bookmark, stickers, a set of bookplates, and WHSmith
goodies including stationery and a £1 WHSmith voucher. A number of
successful events have already taken place, allowing children and
their families to take part in storytelling and other activities. www.rif.org.uk

National Year of Reading
August's National Year of Reading (NYR) theme is 'read
the game'. For reading ideas, visit www.yearofreading.org.uk/index.php?id=readingideas
Taking reading
outdoors In July, the NYR launched a show garden at Hampton Court
Palace Flower Show, which was awarded a silver gilt award. Bordon
Junior School in Hants won the competition to have the garden
redesigned and recycled in their outdoor space. Also in July, the
NYR and Business in the Community transformed three outdoor spaces
in 24 hours in primary schools in Bradford, Nottingham and Salford
into special reading gardens. Download the NYR toolkit on planting and designing an
outdoor reading space
Love
Lyrics Spinebreakers, the NYR and online teen community Piczo, have
joined forces to launch a competition that asks young people to turn
novels into song lyrics. Inspired by Penguin novels, the winning
entrant will have their song performed live by popular electric duo
Dan Le Sacs vs Scroobius Pip. The closing date for all entries is 3
October. For more information visit www.readup.piczo.com.
The NYR will also be
launching a Love Lyrics report, providing insight into how we
as a nation feel about lyrics and songwriting, supported by hip
hop/dancehall artist, Mr Midas.
Telling Tales The
NYR's search for the nation's most enthusiastic amateur storyteller
continues. Having visited Birmingham and Brighton, in
August the crew will be filming more entrants as well as
hosting storytelling sessions featuring local
authors: Manchester: 1 August in St Peter's Square Plymouth: 6
August in West Hoe Park London: 22 August: venue tbc
